âSo⦠what? McFellan thought Jay was in his way somehow and decided to take him out?â Adam asked as he pushed the button for the elevator.
âThat doesnât fit with his personality, does it?â Ramona smiled as she looked sideways at Adam. âHeâs more likely to find some way to get Jay fired, not shoot him. And it probably wouldnât be too hard for him, based on some of the stuff Iâve seen about him online.â
âLike what?â
âHe uses his money and his power to get whatever he wants. Budget line items for pet projects. Congressional votes suddenly shifting his way. You should check out some of the dirt posted on Political Dish.â
Adam smiled, thinking about the last thing he had read. A biography of the Black Count, the father of Alexander Dumas. Fascinating, but probably not relevant to this investigation. âI donât follow political blogs, sorry. So maybe Senator Marshall realized what she was getting into and wanted a way out?â
âDoesnât work.â Ramona smiled again. âHe was still inside when the shot was fired.â
âAnd how could she have done it, when she was standing right next to Jay?â Adam finished the thought for her.
Ramona smiled. âYou read my mind.â
âJust because she couldnât do it herself, doesnât mean she didnât set it up.â
âJohn Marshall has something heâs not telling us, Samâs sure of it. But how could he have done it, either? He was in the house with McFellan.â
âMcFellan admits that Marshall left the room first. Weâve been thinking that left McFellan without an alibi â but it leaves Marshall without a witness, too.â Adam was warming up to this idea when his thoughts were cut off.
âExcuse me. Yes, you. Hello.â The womanâs voice was high and sharp, almost as sharp as the stiletto heels that dug little holes into the carpet as she marched toward them.
âCan we help you?â Ramona turned toward the woman as she spoke.
âYou can leave, thatâs what you can do. I donât know what the hell you thought you were doing, interviewing my client without me present, but itâs all garbage. You canât use any of it.â She glared at Ramona, then turned her attention to Adam. Her eyes moved down from his face to his legs, and her glare softened. She almost smiled.
Adam smiled warmly, his dimples on full display, and put out his hand. âDetective Adam Kaminski. Iâm here from Philadelphia, investigating the murder of Jay Kapoor.â
She took his hand limply. âI know who you are and why youâre here. And why youâre leaving.â
âWeâre leaving because weâre done here.â Ramonaâs smile was saccharine sweet.
âYou, my dear, are leaving because I just spoke to your captain. Youâll be hearing from him any minute now, I imagine.â The lawyerâs smile was triumphant. âAnd you.â She turned to Adam. âI donât know why Philly PD is here, but you have no jurisdiction here. And no right to talk to my client. Again. Period.â She emphasized each word with a tap of her alligator-skin heels.
The three of them stood in the plush and polished hallway, the lawyer glaring at the two police officers.
